Using the WSU Canvas Template (Copy)

Below are instructions for using the WSU Canvas Template in your Canvas course space. If you are starting with a blank course shell, import the template. If your course already contains content in the Syllabus section that you want to keep, download the template instead.

Important: Importing the WSU Canvas Template will overwrite content in the Syllabus section of your course. No other manually entered content will be overwritten. If you have content you want to keep in the Syllabus section, download the template instead.

To import the template

  1. Open the WSU Course Template in the Canvas Commons to begin the import process.
  2. In the Canvas Commons, select Import/Download from the right sidebar.
  3. Select the checkbox next to the course where you want to import the template, then select Import into Course.
  4. A confirmation message will appear indicating that the import has started. Depending on the size of the course, the import process may take several minutes to complete.
  5. Open your course. If the homepage displays the template homepage, the import has completed successfully.

To download the template

  1. Open the WSU Course Template in the Canvas Commons to begin the download process.
  2. In the Canvas Commons, select Import/Download from the right sidebar.
  3. Select Download. This will automatically begin the download of the Canvas Course Export Package to your computer. The file will typically be saved in your Downloads folder.
  4. Open the course where you want to apply the template, and select Import Existing Content from the right sidebar.
  5. Under the Select Content Type dropdown menu, select the Canvas Course Export Package option. Under Source, choose the WSU Canvas Template file that you just downloaded.
  6. Important: Under Content, select the Select specific content option. Then, select Add to Import Queue.
  7. Once the content is added to the Import Queue, a Select Content button will be become available. Select this button.
  8. From the pop-up menu, select all check boxes EXCEPT for the Syllabus. Then, select Select Content.
  9. Open your course. If the homepage displays the template homepage, the import has completed successfully.

Using the template in future semesters

You only need to import the template once for each course. For future semesters, copy your course content into the new course shell and update materials as needed.

If you are teaching a different course and would like to use the template, import the WSU Canvas Template into the course before adding or importing other content.
